What is CPT and OPT in USA?

In the context of studying in the USA, CPT (Curricular Practical Training) and OPT (Optional Practical Training) are two types of work authorization programs that allow international students to gain practical work experience related to their field of study.

Curricular Practical Training (CPT):

CPT is a type of work authorization that allows international students in the USA to engage in paid or unpaid internships, cooperative education programs, or other types of off-campus employment that are considered an integral part of their curriculum.

CPT is typically used for internships or employment opportunities that are required or recommended by the student's academic program and are directly related to their course of study.

To be eligible for CPT, students must have been enrolled full-time for at least one academic year (nine months) in a qualifying program and have a job offer related to their field of study.

CPT authorization is granted by the Designated School Official (DSO) at the student's educational institution and is typically approved on a semester-by-semester basis.

Optional Practical Training (OPT):

France provides a wide range of academic programs and courses, allowing students to choose from a variety of disciplines. Whether you’re interested in arts, sciences, engineering, business, or humanities, you can find suitable programs.

OPT can be used for a total of up to 12 months of full-time employment per academic level (i.e., undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate).

Students may apply for OPT before completing their studies (pre-completion OPT) to gain work experience while still enrolled, or after completing their studies (post-completion OPT) to gain work experience after graduation.

OPT authorization is granted by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and typically takes about 90 days to process. Students must apply for OPT with the assistance of their Designated School Official (DSO) and must have a job offer or employment plan related to their field of study.

Both CPT and OPT provide valuable opportunities for international students to gain practical work experience, develop professional skills, and enhance their resume while studying in the USA. It's important for students to understand the eligibility criteria, application process, and limitations of each program to make the most of their work opportunities while maintaining their F-1 student status.
